Landscapes I’ve Dreamed: Photographs by Trevin Chow

Tonight my good friend Trevin has his opening reception at Trabant Coffee & Chai Lounge.   It’s a collection of his work from around the world.  I might be wrong but I think this is Trevin’s first show and I’m really excited for him and I’ll be there later tonight to support him and check out his latest art.

Folks in Seattle who are free should for sure pop by, either tonight or later this month.  Address is 1309 NE 45th Street, Seattle, 98105.

Kuhlman surrounds Veil

Last night saw the Kuhlman fashion show here in Seattle.  The event happened in the restaurant Veil and the Kuhlman team has carried up the large 'K' sign that normally lives center of the hip clothing store and parked it right next to the Veil sign.  With the darkness of the evening it lit up street corner glowing all red.  I liked how the 'scissors' of the K surround the Veil sign not only with the size but the color contrasts.   A fun night, I should have time to look at the photographs of the various models and guests this weekend.

Last few days

After a nice long run my photography show that has been running at Kuhlman for much of the summer is coming to an end.    The body of work entitled Structure was inspired by my years of traveling around the world.  It started out focusing on the large, impressive buildings in the cities that I have visited.  As the series began to develop, I found myself attracted to more abstract views of these often-famous icons instead of classic ‘postcard’ images.  The majority of work in this collection has been captured over the past few years, taken in Asia, Australia, Europe, South America and of course the United States.  I'm sure you will recognize a few of them even though they are a little different!

There are 12 images in the series.   Each one is numbered and printed at 20x30 inches and framed in a 28x38 high quality museum frame from Nielsen Bainbridge.   I'm pleased to say that the interest and response to the collection has been very positive, both at the opening night and ever since - very humbling for me.   And I'm happy to report that  I've had a few sales too!

A few folks have pinged me recently inquiring if the show was still running and in case folks are in downtown Seattle this weekend you can still check it out.  I remove the work on Monday night.   Seeing as the holiday is coming up maybe one of the images would make a good gift idea either for your home or a deserving friend!

structure opening

The opening nigh for structure felt like a real success last night.  There was a surprising large turn-out, lots of friends, a few work colleges and then what was really nice folks that I have never meet before and had a blast getting to know.   The wine from Woodhouse Family Cellars was flowing well, the conversation was lively and folks seemed to be having a lot of fun.  For a few folks that I didn’t manage to speak to I apologize for that, at times things got a little nuts!

Now I can get back into other projects that I have been slacking on.  I do want to thank a few friends that helped me pull things together and who help and support I greatly appreciate.

  • Susie & Brenda for help with the framing.
  • Heather, Kathryn, Brenda and Alanna for help on flyers and stuff.
  • Heather and Scott for hosting the event.
  • Bijal for the wine.
  • And then everyone else for showing up and supporting me.

A nice little reward was that I sold a few pieces as well

TopSeattle as there covering the event.  A few pics from them are posted here

printing and framing

I haven’t been up here much this week, been a little busy printing and framing for the start of the structure show.  Well the good news is that everything is done and the work placed onto the walls and one hanging directly from the ceiling!   A very interesting week and one that I have been thankful to have the help of a few great friends which not only has made the task easier but also a lot of fun.

OK, time to shower and change.  For folks that are coming along that maybe I don’t know please grab me and a say hi.   I’ll be the one with the long brownish/grayish hair!

Now I just wait for the feedback.

Wine & Photography: Woodhouse Family Cellars

Yesterday I was listening to our local NPR station, KUOW and a show they call ‘The Beat’ when my ears perked up when along came an article talking about two of my favorite subjects, Wine and Photography

Well known wine photographer Sara Matthews was on the show talking about her recent experiences photographing Washington’s vineyards amongst other locations.   Washington wines have started to become really popular over the last few years so I guess it shouldn’t have been a surprise when Bijal Shah who I have known close on to ten years, and his lovely wife Sinead first told me about Woodhouse Family Cellars that they started a few years ago.    The cellar is a partnership between the Shahs and winemaker Tom Campbell, Shah’s uncle.   They debuted with 100 cases of their 1998 vintage of Darighe, a Bordeaux style blend that sold out three months after its release in 2001.  Their 1999 Daríghe won critical acclaim as an ultra-premium wine that quickly generated a loyal following.

Recently their forth label takes its name from Bijal & Sinead’s oldest daughter, Kennedy Shah and not only is it a wonderful wine but what I love is that every time you purchase a bottle/case 20% of the sales from this label go directly to a foundation that is working with a number of organizations that are raising much needed funds for women’s and children’s causes.  Part of the idea here is that local companies supporting local charities help to strengthen the communities through nurture and inspiration.   Some of the first organizations to receive a donation from this release will include the Women’s Funding Alliance, Childhaven, Children’s Developmental Center, The First Tee, the Moyer Foundation, PEPS, Parent Trust for Washington Children and Ryther Child Center.

As it happens I’ve managed to persuade Bijal to supply the wine for this coming Friday evening for the opening night of structure, so for folks that might be considering attending another good reason!     With a bit of luck I will be working with Bijal & his team a bunch over the next few months on a couple of photo projects.   They also produces small allocations of two other premium wines, Dussek Family Cellars Cabernet and Maghie Cellars Merlot.

Wine and photography – perfect!

a little bit of structure

I know a few people know this, but for the others that either live in Seattle or are planning to visit this summer I wanted to let you know that I have a show coming up.  Inspired by my years of traveling around the world, this collection of images started as an examination of large, impressive structures in the cities that I have visited. As the series began to develop, I found myself attracted to more abstract views of these often-famous icons instead of classic ‘postcard’ images.  Often when working on a project, the selection of images evolves and as such, I started to mix photographs of objects that were perhaps a little common with the more impressive.

The majority of work in this collection has been captured over the past few years, taken in Asia, Australia, Europe, South America and of course the United States. My hope is that when you see these images the process of determining what the subject is may take you a few minutes, whether it be iconic or downright ordinary.

This series will be exhibited in downtown Seattle between August and October at Kuhlman, a style-conscious clothing store with unique, hand-tailored fashions. (Ever since Fast Forward shut down this has to be the store of choice!) We have a small opening night scheduled on Friday, August 18th. They’ll be drinks and nibbles to snack on as you check out some of their cool clothing and my art. If you’re in town, I would love for you to pop in to say hi and check out some of my work.

Upcoming Heather Ribeca show

I always love learning new things about people you know, especially when you can relate to them.  I’m known Heather Ribeca for quite a few years now.  Initially I was impressed with some of her jewelry that she was wearing only to discover that she actually made it.  Then later I discovered that she was a painter.  But it was only just recently that I found out that she has another artistic flair and that is all around her photography.

Turns out she has been shooting seriously for years and is just about to have a show of her work, basically a combination of some seven years of her travels from everywhere from Illinois to Italy and in-between.   What sounds interesting to me is that she is planning to frame many of the pieces with car head gaskets!   Turns out that her hubby works with cars and it sounds like she has a way to get a bunch of gaskets and have been using them as frames.     Who would have thought that these would make great frames!

If anyone happens to be downtown in Seattle over the next couple of months her show is going to be at the Kuhlman clothing store in Belltown and starts this coming Friday, June 9th and goes onto August 2nd.  Not only can you see her work but maybe you can find that new spring outfit you have been looking for too!   The address is below

Talking about Gone Paintin'

I’ve been in life catch-up mode after getting back from Europe and a little tied up these last couple of days.

This note did come into my inbox from Ethan that he has an opening night coming On June 1st.   Brenda and I bumped into Ethan one day when he was out in Belltown Seattle working on some paintings.  I would say that my primary appreciation for art is photography but I have to say I love this guy’s paintings.   His approach of taking real subjects - landscapes, cityscapes or people and adding an almost surreal touch to the images, lots of curves and colors to highlight the subject results in some simply wonderful.  He is also available for commission should there be a locations/person that you want captured in his unique style.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year coming to Seattle

I just noticed that the Burke Museum in Seattle is going to be showing the award winning BBC Wildlife of the Year exhibition that was shown at the Natural History Museum in London earlier this year.  Although I was in London during the show I failed to make it to the show this year although I did last year.  I have the book that I bought from the BBC’s web site and the images are wonderful.  I’m going to check this out for sure when it comes to Seattle.

Invisible

 Invisible or invincible?

These last two nights I have been shooting the dress rehearsals for a new show that is being performed in Seattle – a show called the Invisible.

Jessica Jobaris has been much of the energy behind this new production working hand in hand with the cast, Luke Allen, Christiana Axelsen, Kyle Glanville, Marissa Niederhauser and Deanna Mustard.  Wednesday was their first end-to-end dress rehearsal with just one of Jessica’s friend’s in the audience and me roaming the floor doing my best to keep up with this incredibly fast moving production.   Tonight they had some twenty or so friends in attendance and I’m pleased to say they had ironed out some of their technical challenges with the lighting and sound.   I’ve never shot a dance performance before and found the experience exhilarating and humbling.    These dancers/actors are incredible and I don’t think I’ve had to work so hard to capture a shot before ~ lions of Zambia were more predictable that this crew!

Focused

The show balances a bunch of different media, dance, music, video in a somewhat sort of silent film.  It has been described as a surrreal comic-drama, with a mix of Hollywood Stire, that enables this dance~threatre group to examine the humorous and pathetic ideology of fame and man's search for meaning.  Exhilarating dance and quirky stortelling documents the dark side of Shirley Temple, Clara Bow, Lulu Brooks, Erast Garin and Edweard Muybridge.   Sorta fitting for an Oscars weekend!

The show starts tomorrow evening at the Chamber Theatre on East Pine Street in Seattle.   Show starts at 8pm and is $12 at the door.   For additional information about the show check out http://www.hyphen9.com/invisible/

Babykake

Yesterday I spent much of the day completing a bunch of images from theThursday shoot with Pepper Grind and Babykake, two burlesque performers who are busy getting ready for two upcoming show’s at the Re-bar in Seattle.  Here is one of the images, this one just of Babykake with her gun.

don't mess with me

Love is a Battlefield

Last night I did a shoot with Pepper Grind and Babykake - well, those are their stages names at least!    My friend Pepper is in the process of producing and organizing another burlesque show in just over a week and she wanted to take some shots of herself and her partner for a poster and other promotional materials.   The whole thing has come together really last minute so its going to be a rush to get stuff finished in time but we are going to give it a shot.

This is one of the many proofs that I just uploaded for the ladies to look at and decide which images to use.  I like this one of the two of them just hanging out and resting for a moment as I changed the lights.

For folks that happen to be in Seattle and want a fun show the first event is happening on February the 12th at the Re-bar in downtown Seattle, door opens at 7pm with the show starting at 8pm.  Then again, their second show is on Feb 17th, again at the Re-bar.
